Benin, the birthplace of Vodun (Voodoo), offers fascinating cultural experiences through West African traditions, royal palaces, and diverse landscapes from coastal lagoons to northern savannas. This small nation provides authentic encounters with traditional African life.

The Royal Palaces of Abomey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, served as the capital of the powerful Dahomey Kingdom from 1625 to 1900. The museums within the palace compounds display remarkable bas-reliefs and artifacts documenting the kingdom's complex history including the famous Amazon warriors.

Ouidah stands as the spiritual heart of Vodun, with the Python Temple housing sacred serpents, the Route of Slaves memorial marking the path taken by enslaved Africans to the sea, and the annual Vodun Festival in January drawing practitioners worldwide. The Door of No Return monument on the beach poignantly marks this dark history.
