South Africa's Garden Route is one of the continent's most celebrated road trips, stretching approximately 300 kilometers along the southeastern coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River. Combined with the drive from Cape Town along the coast, this creates one of the world's most diverse and rewarding driving experiences.
The journey typically begins in Cape Town, one of the world's most beautiful cities. The drive along the spectacular Chapman's Peak, carved into the cliffside above the Atlantic Ocean, is an unforgettable introduction. Continue south to the Cape of Good Hope, then east through the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where world-class wine estates offer tastings and gourmet lunches among the vineyards.
The Garden Route proper begins at Mossel Bay and passes through a landscape of indigenous forests, dramatic coastline, and charming towns. Knysna, set on a beautiful lagoon with sandstone cliffs called The Heads, is the route's highlight. Take a boat trip to see the famous Knysna seahorses and sample fresh oysters. Plettenberg Bay offers stunning beaches and the chance to see whales, dolphins, and seals. Tsitsikamma National Park, at the eastern end, features dramatic river gorges, suspension bridges, and the start of the famous Otter Trail.
An IDP is required for visitors driving in South Africa. Driving is on the left side of the road. The N2 highway is the main route and is generally in good condition, though some sections are single-lane. Speed limits are 120 km/h on national roads, 80 km/h on secondary roads, and 60 km/h in urban areas.
Wildlife encounters add excitement to the journey — watch for baboons at Cape Point and along the Garden Route, and consider adding a safari detour to Addo Elephant National Park near the eastern end. The best time to drive the Garden Route is October to April, during the Southern Hemisphere summer.
