The main coastal drive from Lagos to Faro covers approximately 80 kilometers and can be driven in under two hours, but you'll want to take at least three to four days to explore properly. Start in Lagos, a lively town with a fascinating maritime history and some of the Algarve's most dramatic coastal rock formations. The nearby Ponta da Piedade headland, with its golden grottoes and sea stacks, is absolutely spectacular.
Heading east along the coast, you'll pass through Portimao, the traditional sardine capital of Portugal, and Carvoeiro, a picturesque cliffside village. The charming town of Silves, set inland along the river, boasts a magnificent Moorish castle and orange groves. Albufeira offers a vibrant nightlife scene, while the quieter eastern Algarve around Tavira preserves a more authentic Portuguese atmosphere with its white-washed buildings and tile roofs.
Don't miss the dramatic cliff walks at Seven Hanging Valleys (Sete Vales Suspensos), frequently rated Europe's best coastal walk. The Benagil sea cave, accessible by kayak or boat from the beach, is one of Portugal's most photographed natural wonders. Driving in Portugal is straightforward. The A22 motorway runs the length of the Algarve for fast travel, while the N125 and smaller coastal roads provide more scenic alternatives. An IDP is recommended for non-EU visitors. Portuguese drivers are generally courteous, and the road infrastructure is modern. Fuel is moderately priced by European standards, and excellent roadside restaurants serving fresh fish make every driving break a culinary experience.
