Guía de viaje del país

Belize, Central America's only English-speaking nation, offers Caribbean beaches, ancient Maya ruins, and jungle adventures in a compact, easily navigable package. This former British Honduras provides excellent driving opportunities through diverse landscapes.

The Maya ruins of Caracol, Xunantunich, and Lamanai rival those of neighboring Guatemala and Mexico. Caracol's Caana pyramid stands as the tallest man-made structure in Belize. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave offers a unique archaeological experience walking through chambers containing Maya ceremonial artifacts and calcified remains.

The Belize Barrier Reef, the world's second-largest, creates exceptional snorkeling and diving from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. The Great Blue Hole, a giant marine sinkhole, attracts divers worldwide.

The mainland offers jungle lodges in the Cayo District, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (the world's first jaguar preserve), and Garifuna culture along the southern coast. Placencia and Hopkins provide beach alternatives to the cayes.

Belizean cuisine reflects its diverse population with rice and beans, stew chicken, fresh seafood, Garifuna hudut (fish and plantain stew), and Marie Sharp's hot sauce on everything. Belikin beer accompanies most meals.

Driving in Belize is on the right with the main highways (Northern and Western Highways) in reasonable condition. Secondary roads can be rough, especially during the rainy season. An International Driving Permit is recommended. Distances are manageable—the entire country is smaller than Massachusetts.
