Cappadocia, in central Turkey, is famous for its fairy chimneys — towering rock formations sculpted by volcanic eruptions and erosion over millions of years. Driving through the valleys of Goreme, Uchisar, and Derinkuyu allows you to explore underground cities, rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes, and viewpoints that become magical at sunrise when hot air balloons fill the sky. The roads around Cappadocia are well-maintained and easy to navigate.
From Cappadocia, the route south passes through the Taurus Mountains, one of Turkey's most scenic driving experiences. The descent toward the Mediterranean coast reveals the ancient cities of Pamphylia — Aspendos with its perfectly preserved Roman theater, Perge, and Side. Turkish drivers can be aggressive, particularly in cities — defensive driving is essential.
