Scottish Highlands Road Trip: Castles, Lochs, and Whisky

The Scottish Highlands offer some of the most dramatic and unspoiled landscapes in Europe, making them a paradise for road-trippers. The North Coast 500, often called Scotland's answer to Route 66, is a 516-mile circuit starting and ending in Inverness that takes you through some of Britain's most remote and beautiful terrain.

Beginning in Inverness, the route hugs the coastline northward through the dramatic mountain scenery of Wester Ross, where single-track roads wind through ancient Caledonian pine forests. The Bealach na Ba pass from the coast to Applecross is one of the steepest and most thrilling roads in Britain, with hairpin bends climbing to over 600 meters with views to the Isle of Skye.

Along the way, you'll discover pristine white-sand beaches that could rival the Caribbean (minus the temperature), medieval castles perched on cliff edges, and charming villages where Gaelic is still spoken. Don't miss the chance to visit a Highland whisky distillery — there are several along the route, including famous names like Glenmorangie and Old Pulteney.

Driving in Scotland requires attention to the unique road conditions. Many Highland roads are single-track with passing places — the etiquette is to pull into the nearest passing place when you see an oncoming vehicle. Sheep and Highland cattle frequently wander onto roads, especially in remote areas. Fuel stations can be scarce, so fill up whenever possible.

An IDP is accepted in Scotland for visitors from countries outside the UK. Drive on the left, and be prepared for rain at any time of year. The best time for driving the Highlands is May to September, when you'll enjoy longer daylight hours — in midsummer, it barely gets dark. Book accommodation well in advance during summer months, as options are limited in remote areas.
