Driving the Amalfi Coast, Italy: A Mediterranean Dream

The Amalfi Coast in southern Italy is one of Europe's most iconic driving destinations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching approximately 50 kilometers along the Sorrentine Peninsula. The road, known as SS163, clings to dramatic cliffs high above the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea, offering views that have inspired artists and travelers for centuries.

Starting from Sorrento and winding south to Salerno, this route takes you through a string of picturesque towns perched on cliffsides. Positano, with its cascading pastel-colored houses tumbling toward the sea, is the most photographed. Amalfi town itself boasts a magnificent 9th-century cathedral and a fascinating history as a once-powerful maritime republic. Ravello, set high above the coast, offers magnificent gardens at Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone with panoramic views that are simply unforgettable.

Driving here requires confidence and skill. The road is narrow, with sharp hairpin turns and oncoming traffic that includes large tour buses. Start early in the morning to avoid the worst congestion, and consider driving from east to west (Salerno to Sorrento) to stay on the cliff side of the road for the best views. Parking in the towns is extremely limited and expensive — many travelers park in Sorrento and use ferries or buses for day trips.

An International Driving Permit is required for non-EU license holders driving in Italy. Italian traffic rules are strictly enforced with ZTL (limited traffic zones) in many historic town centers. Be aware of speed cameras and mandatory headlight use in tunnels. Despite the challenges, driving the Amalfi Coast remains one of the world's most rewarding automotive experiences, combining natural beauty, incredible cuisine, and the warmth of Italian hospitality.
