New Zealand is consistently ranked as one of the world's best road trip destinations, and for good reason. This compact country packs an astonishing variety of landscapes into its two main islands — snow-capped mountains, pristine fjords, volcanic plateaus, subtropical forests, golden beaches, and rolling green farmland. The best way to experience it all is behind the wheel.
The South Island is a road-tripper's dream. The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound through the dramatic Milford Road passes through ancient beech forests, mirror-like lakes, and towering mountain peaks. The journey to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers takes you along the wild West Coast. The road from Christchurch to Queenstown via Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook offers some of the most photogenic scenery imaginable, with turquoise glacial lakes set against alpine backdrops.
The North Island offers equally compelling driving, though the landscape is different. The Thermal Explorer Highway takes you through the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, the Hobbiton movie set near Matamata, and the volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park. The Coromandel Peninsula coastal road leads to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The Far North offers the dramatic Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean.
An IDP is required for most international visitors driving in New Zealand. Driving is on the left, and many roads are narrow, winding two-lane highways — even main intercity routes. New Zealand driving culture emphasizes courtesy, but be prepared for campervans and tourists unfamiliar with the roads. Speed limits are 100 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. Many rural roads are unsealed (gravel), requiring careful speed management.
Allow at least two weeks to drive both islands, though three weeks is ideal. The Interislander ferry between Wellington and Picton carries vehicles across the Cook Strait, offering another spectacular scenic experience.
